Trip details

The Rio Grande Valley (“the Valley”) is a hotspot for odonates, butterflies and birds. People travel from all over the world to get a glimpse of some of the unique critters that call the Valley home.

The Valley is located on the Texas-Mexico border where the star is on the map to the right.

We will leave Austin on July 20th early in the morning for a 5 hour chartered bus ride to Alamo, Texas. On the way we may stop at a spot or two to see unique odonates and stop for lunch. We will end up a the Alamo Inn.

If we have time on the evening of the 20th we will try and visit a local spot for dragonflies. On the 21-23 we will visit some of the well known dragonfly locations at various parks like Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, NABA butterfly park, and Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge.

We will head back to Austin on the morning of July 24th and return by 5 PM.

We will be able to do some limited collecting of odonates at several state parks on this trip.
